Moviri at Velocity Conference 2012 – Day 3

Santa Clara, June 27, 2012 – Our last day at the Velocity Conference 2012. The morning session is organized like the previous one, with several talks grouped by the two main topics of the conference: Stronger and Faster. The exhibit hall is also open today, during the afternoon we will look for other interesting solutions.

After lunch there is a presentation on the most widespread browsers: Opera, Chrome and Firefox (Browsers) and their new performance features.

Another topic of the conference is automation, and the eccentric Joshua Hoffman (Tumblr) explain us a way to deploy an automation solution with open source software (Scalable System Operations). Operations work can be at times tedious, repetitive, and error-prone. With this solutions it can become fast, efficient and reliable.

We passed the last few hours of the conference at the exhibit hall to meet and discuss with engineers of the technical solutions that were presented during Velocity. This is an opportunity to get Moviri known and share our knowledge on application performance monitoring.

Here’s some of the most interesting solutions that we found on the floor:

• AppFirst offers a great solution that brings together business and IT by delivering a shared view of business and system metrics.
• NeoLoad is an interesting distributed load testing software provided by Neotys that works on both Linux and Windows platforms and supports whatever architecture, even the newest ones such as Flex, Silverlight, GWT and Ajax Push.
• Keynote, with its web performance and test software is the most complete solution. It covers Load testing and RUM. In particular its Load Testing solution uses an interesting approach towards end-user modeling with the Selenium framework and performs end-to-end monitoring of both business process monitoring and load testing with the same script.
• Buondary network monitoring and traffic analyzer tool’s major strength is almost real-time monitoring with up to 1 minute time granularity.
• Finally, Twitter Iago is an open source extensible load generation tool written in Scala. It provides high performance and can speak with whatever protocols in order to model the most complex system. The most interesting capability is configurable request rate with custom statistical distribution (default model is Poisson Process).

In conclusion, We left this Velocity 2012 with a few key takeaways:

• Using front-end optimization is another interesting approach to improve our web sites
• Measuring the mobile web is hard, but things are improving. Chrome for Android mobile debugging is an example.
• Strengthen your web using Stability Patterns
• Simplify server and datacenter lifecycle management with automation solutions (even open source world offers good solution)
